A Picture for Healing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Akmal t Muwwakkil.

It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

As a young man, I grew up in the healing atmosphere of my Mother, who was a healer. It was not my intent to become a healer, because it seemed weird. In college I taught myself photography and proceeded to become a photojournalist. My photos have been published in major and local newspapers and magazines. My mind was on winning the Pulitzer Prize. God, however, had another plan. What was interesting, Mother knew God’s plan for me to become a priest and healer. During the 70’s I studied natural herbs, Tai Chi, Qigong, acupuncture, and later in my life I received a PHD in nutrition. One Wednesday evening after a photographic assignment on Washington, DC’s Capitol Hill, I went back to my studio to drop off my equipment. That evening I heard GOD saying, take your photo bag and computer home. I thought I was bigger than the message and responded into the air, I’m tired, and I’m not taking anything anywhere! Well, when I returned to the studio that Thursday morning, I discovered that someone had broken into the office and stole $8,000 worth of my uninsured photo equipment. THAT was the day GOD changed the direction of my life. I rented an office and began my healing practice. I continued to learn natural medicine, Chinese and Japanese medicine, and receive a PH.D. in nutrition. Within that time, I have authored 5 books and have lectured nationally and internationally.

I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

Over the years there have been a few challenges, my biggest challenge came during COVID, when I had to close my medical practice. It made me reinvent myself. I relied on my traditional Chinese background to maintain some type of livelihood. The diagnostic systems of Chinese medicine are much different then western medicine. One of the modalities is Tongue Diagnoses. I began offering virtual medical appointments using this method of healing evaluation. Patients would email me 4 pictures of their tongue for evaluation, and then over a HIPPA medical secure website we would meet for their assessment and health protocol. The protocol consisted of selfcare herbs treatments, micronutrients (minerals/vitamins) therapy, selfcare Tui Na acupoint treatments, and Qigong practices. I also began a series of online health master classes.

Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

I am the President and Founder of Energy Institute (a 501 (C) 3 nonprofit organization) and Dr. Akmal Speaks Health and Wellness Clinic. I hold a Ph.D. in nutrition, and am licensed as an acupuncturist in the state of Maryland. I studied acupuncture and Tui Na in the United States, Canada, and China. Over the years I have been very successful in assisting patients in reversing diabetes, which was my thesis for my Ph.D., that was developed into a book Sweet Mysteries of Life a Handbook for Naturally Preventing and Healing Diabetes Mellitus. I have established therapeutic treatments to reduce and/or eliminate hypertension, as well as to promote stroke rehabilitation. I have formulated protocols to aid women and men in their reproductive health disharmonies, including but not limited to menstrual, infertility, fibroids, prostate, and erectile dysfunction. I have received grants from Susan G Komen for the Cure © to assist women in their health (Caring for Life Breast Cancer Health & Wellness Program). Many of my patients and friends refer other patients. I stand out because I don’t just treat patients, but I educate them on how to enhance their health through introducing healthy lifestyle changes, Tui Na acupoint therapy, Qigong postures and my monthly online health and wellness SelfCare courses, “Let’s Have A Conversation About Health.”

What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

Success is when you wake up in the morning to a new day full of possibilities and you have an understanding of your health and life’s direction. Your health is your first success story, because if you don’t have good health, but only have money, you really don’t have success. Your mental, physical, and spiritual health is the most important element of your life. Once you have achieved good health, you should review your interpretation of what success looks and feels like to you. You should understand where you are going in life and stay the course towards your success, because success takes work. No one can give you success, they can guide you toward it, but if you don’t understand the elements of it, success can slide right through your fingers. Look at the many people who won big money in the lottery and now have little to no money. They had no idea how to work with their success. On the other hand, there are people who won the lottery and have continued being successful because they understood what success looked like to them. You should have a clear perception of where you are in your life now as you move towards your success. Your success looks different then someone else’s. So when you wake up in the morning, ask yourself, what does my success look like today.

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

Success begins when I open my eyes in the morning and take my first conscious breath of the morning — that is when I know I have been given the ability to continue my dream. Success is understanding the elements of my life and their interpretations. Success is the integration of the essential elements necessary to insure me daily health (meditation, prayer, Qigong, micronutrients, medical herbs, and seasonal foods). Success is watching my dreams evolve to their highest highs. It is when I can say, I have accomplished another track on my journey called life. Success is when I am able to find peace within as I live in a surrounding world with so much chaos. Success for me is being able to spend time with the essential people in my life — my children, grandchild, my Queen, and extended family. Success is about having more finances in my life, but I know that as I continue to provide services, assist people in their health and educate the masses, that my financial success is securely on the horizon. Success is about doing the work ordained as part of my heavenly contract with God.

What’s next for you?

After my more than 45 years as a clinician, my next step is to continue teaching the elements of health to the world and aid people in eliminating their pain and suffering by hosting master classes. I am also evolving toward expanding my health motivational speaking engagements at more conferences, lectures, workshops, and retreats to assist consumers in enhancing their health. I am interested in developing healthy lifestyle programs for companies to assist their workers in reducing their sick time out, which enables the companies to increase their productivity. I have and will continue to work with schools to introduce healthy lifestyle programs to students, which will give them a jump start on their health. Over my years as a clinician, I have produced over 25 herbal products for my patients, and as I move forward, I plan on expanding my reach to offering these products nationally and internationally. I am looking forward to collaborating with other health organizations to assist in promoting health and wellness as well as increasing my ability to present my expertise on more podcasts, radio shows, and television programs, as well as increase my ability to have my articles published in magazines and newspapers domestically and globally. I have two books I am presently working on that I hope to complete this year, to complement the other five books I have authored.
