Christine Turo-Shields Reflects on Grief, Faith, and Sister Connie’s Legacy

In moments of deep loss, wisdom often emerges in quiet and unexpected ways. For therapist and grief specialist Christine Turo-Shields, one such moment came during a conversation with her beloved mentor, Sister Connie Kramer. Their dialogue about grief, life, and mortality would later become both a treasured memory and a guiding light for many who struggle to make sense of loss.

Now, that reflection has found a wider audience through a recently published essay in the National Catholic Reporter. In the piece, Turo-Shields shares the profound lessons she learned from Sister Connie’s life and death, offering readers a compassionate perspective on grief as a companion rather than an adversary.

A Mentor’s Wisdom in the Face of Mortality

A little over a year ago, on January 30, 2025, Sister Connie passed away after complications related to an inoperable brain tumor. Throughout her religious life within the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, she served in many roles including teacher, pastoral counselor, spiritual director, and retreat leader.

Her work touched countless lives. Yet perhaps her most enduring legacy is the wisdom she shared about grief and acceptance.

Before her passing, Turo-Shields conducted a deeply personal interview with Sister Connie for StoryCorps. The conversation preserved Sister Connie’s reflections on loss, faith, and the courage to face life’s inevitable transitions.

During that interview, Sister Connie spoke candidly about what it means to live fully even while approaching death. The words she shared continue to resonate.

“Those who do not make peace with Life, fear Death,” Turo-Shields reflects, echoing the profound insight that has shaped her own understanding of grief.

Grief as a Companion on Life’s Journey

For nearly twenty five years, Turo-Shields has guided individuals and families through some of life’s most difficult seasons at Kenosis Counseling Center, Inc.. The center’s philosophy encourages people to embrace personal, emotional, and spiritual growth through its guiding message: Empty Yourself. Change Your Life. Fill Your Future.

Her essay invites readers to see grief not as something to overcome or avoid, but as an experience that can deepen compassion and understanding.

Through the lens of her friendship with Sister Connie, Turo-Shields reminds readers that grief is not the enemy. Rather, it can be a faithful companion that walks beside us as we navigate life’s most tender moments.

Continuing a Legacy of Faith and Healing

Beyond her clinical work, Turo-Shields is a published author and nationally recognized speaker who explores the intersection of spirituality, mental health, and healing. She also serves on the Indiana State Board for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

In the coming year, she will share her insights at several events and gatherings focused on grief, suicide loss, spirituality, and community healing.

Through these conversations and her writing, Turo-Shields continues the work that she and Sister Connie cherished most: helping others discover meaning, resilience, and hope in the midst of life’s hardest experiences.
