Deidre Pujols: Empowering Others to Turn Passion Into Purpose

After years of working in the shadow of MLB fame, Deidre Pujols is stepping into her own spotlight—not as a celebrity spouse, but as a visionary philanthropist and entrepreneur. Her mission is clear: to help others turn their passions into sustainable acts of service.

Through her organization Open Gate International, Pujols is teaching others that giving back doesn’t have to be a dream reserved for the wealthy—it can be a structured, purpose-driven path that anyone can follow.

Discovering Her Own Mission

“When I was invited to speak, it was often because of my husband,” she admits. “Now, I’m showing up as myself.”

After years of public speaking on faith, human trafficking, and Down syndrome advocacy, Pujols realized her next chapter wasn’t just about doing the work—it was about helping others find their ‘why.’ Many people, she says, want to make a difference but don’t know where to start. Her role is to guide them toward discovering the cause that moves them most deeply.

Overcoming the Barriers of Giving

Pujols is candid about the hurdles. “Nonprofits face constant funding challenges and red tape,” she says. “And even when people are inspired, they don’t always engage.”

Her campaign Strike Out Slavery—a nationwide awareness initiative against human trafficking—showed her both the power and limits of visibility. While it drew massive crowds, turning awareness into action required persistence, organization, and collaboration.

Building Sustainable Change

In 2016, she launched Open Gate International to teach life skills through culinary training. What began as a California-based program for incarcerated youth is now a global model spanning India, Cambodia, and Eastern Europe.

Pujols’ next major milestone is building a new kitchen in Calcutta, designed as a business that funds scholarships for vulnerable students. “Everyone trains side by side,” she says. “You’d never know who paid tuition and who came from the slums. That’s dignity in action.”

Purpose Beyond Profit

Her philosophy blends business acumen with compassion. “Never start a business plan that doesn’t include giving back,” she advises. “Your gifts should serve others as much as they sustain you.”

Pujols’ work demonstrates that true philanthropy doesn’t rely solely on charity—it thrives when compassion meets structure.
