Who is Tilila?
Tilila, formerly known as Ghita, is a Moroccan-born artist known globally for her eclectic musical style. She’s fluent in French, Spanish, English, and Arabic, and her music is a vibrant mix of her rich cultural background. Her journey to stardom is anything but typical—it’s a tale of unexpected turns and a deep love for music.
The Surprising Leap to Music
Originally, Tilila was all set to dive into the world of architecture. She had her heart set on designing buildings until a chance encounter with Berklee College of Music in Boston changed everything. While looking for singing lessons, she found Berklee and, driven by curiosity, secretly applied. She wasn’t sure how her traditional dad would take it, given his emphasis on conventional education.
Getting accepted into Berklee was a game-changer. This wasn’t just about joining a prestigious music school; it was about proving her passion and talent. The real turning point, though, came when she performed at the Mawazine Festival, opening for Maroon 5. Her dad, who had been skeptical about her musical pursuits, saw her perform and finally got on board, becoming one of her biggest cheerleaders.
Inspirations: Family Roots and Musical Heroes
Tilila’s inspirations are a blend of personal heroes and diverse musical genres. Her mom is her rock and best friend, while her grandmother, who has passed away, left an indelible mark on her. She describes her grandma as a powerhouse of strength and optimism, values that Tilila holds dear in her artistic journey.
Musically, Tilila is a bit of a chameleon. She’s been influenced by everything from American pop to French classics and traditional Moroccan sounds. Growing up, she vibed with Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Ed Sheeran, and Adele, along with French icons like Jean-Jacques Goldman. Her Spanish music crushes added another layer to her style.
Berklee was where she fell in love with jazz, diving into the soulful tunes of Aretha Franklin, Etta James, and Nina Simone. This mix of influences has shaped a unique sound that’s all her own, reflecting her multicultural background.
Becoming Tilila
Rebranding from Ghita to Tilila wasn’t just a name change—it was a whole new vibe. Tilila’s music now blends Mediterranean, Moroccan, and American influences, sprinkled with Spanish and French flair. This international mix is a nod to her diverse roots and her goal to create music that resonates globally.
Her single “Thank You,” a heartfelt tribute to her family, dropped on June 21st. It’s a song that captures her gratitude and the deep impact her family has had on her journey.
Tilila’s story is about following your heart, embracing your roots, and making music that’s a true reflection of who you are. From architecture to the stage, her journey is a modern tale of passion and persistence.
