Healing Beyond the System: How Two Nurse Practitioners Are Humanizing Modern Medicine

When Brittany Delaney and Chrissy Akins left their corporate healthcare jobs to start their own clinic, they weren’t just opening a business—they were reclaiming the soul of medicine.

Both nurse practitioners had built and managed successful clinics for a large healthcare corporation. But the further they climbed, the more they saw something missing: genuine connection.

“We realized if we could grow clinics for someone else, we could do it for ourselves—and do it better,” says Delaney. “Corporations shouldn’t be running medicine.”

That belief led to the creation of Inicio Wellness, a name derived from Latin meaning “a new beginning.” For the founders, it represented not only their professional leap but also the journey they hoped to ignite for every patient seeking care that truly listens.

From Telehealth to Transformational Care

Their story began modestly. They launched with telehealth visits, testing the waters before opening their first physical clinic. Patients responded to their empathetic, holistic approach—one that focused on functional medicine and wellness rather than merely prescribing medications.

The model resonated. Within months, word spread. Today, Inicio Wellness offers both in-person and virtual visits, integrating whole-body wellness and lifestyle-based medicine to treat patients beyond symptoms.

Learning to Lead Like Entrepreneurs

Neither Delaney nor Akins had a business degree. Their expertise lay in healing, not in spreadsheets or business plans. Yet, as Akins puts it, “Entrepreneurship is like medicine—it’s learned through practice.”

They spent nights researching business models, reading about compliance laws, and navigating Texas’s regulatory complexities. Marketing was equally daunting—until they discovered the power of relationships.

“We joined the local Chamber of Commerce, started showing up at events, and literally handed out business cards,” Delaney recalls. “But the real breakthrough came from word of mouth. When you care, patients tell others.”

The Mentorship That Changed Everything

Another turning point came when they met Dr. Amir Baluch, who responded to their search for a supervising physician. What they didn’t expect was to find a mentor and entrepreneurial ally.

“He wasn’t just a medical advisor,” says Akins. “He was an inspiration—a business-minded physician who gave us confidence and practical advice to grow.”

Baluch’s guidance, paired with their determination, transformed their small startup into a respected wellness practice with expanding reach.

Redefining Success in Healthcare

Ask Delaney and Akins about their proudest achievement, and they won’t mention numbers or growth charts. Instead, they speak about trust—the foundation of everything they do.

“Your brand in healthcare isn’t your logo,” says Delaney. “It’s how patients feel when they walk out the door.”

They advise aspiring founders to start with service, not sales, outsource tasks early, and share their personal stories. “People don’t just choose a clinic,” Akins adds. “They choose people.”

Managing Burnout and Staying Human

As caregivers, the line between work and life can blur. They admit that burnout is a real threat—but they’ve learned to build systems around sustainability.

Outsourcing billing, marketing, and administrative work has helped, as has adopting new electronic health records and hiring virtual assistants. Yet the biggest antidote to burnout, they say, is shared purpose.

“We talk through the tough days,” Delaney says. “When we see how our care impacts lives, it reminds us why we started this.”

Looking Ahead: Scaling Without Losing Soul

Inicio Wellness is now expanding to Utah, with plans to serve neighboring states. They’re also partnering with forward-thinking companies like InsideTracker and exploring genotyping to tailor treatments based on patient DNA.

Their long-term vision? To become national leaders in patient-centered care, offering education, mentorship, and ethical leadership across healthcare.

“We believe healthcare can scale without losing its humanity,” says Akins. “Our mission is proof.”
