Retired Pro Athlete Ray Green Speaks On The Death Of His Child, Bereavement & Mental Illness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ray Green.

It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

I’m a retired Pro athlete. I played for the NY Giants, Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins, and the NY Jets. I’m also a Carolina Gamecock Alumni.

I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

5 years ago my 9 year old daughter suddenly passed away. And it’s been extremely rough on me and my family, it’s one of the reasons I struggle daily. We weren’t aware of how important it was to know the hospital’s track records in your area ahead of time. Before you come into an emergency situation. Our daughter went into cardiac arrest after the hospital which is now closed indefinitely mishandled her treatment of walking pneumonia from beginning to end. Then, the statute of limitations on a 9-year-olds death is only 2 years in the state of Florida. So it doesn’t give distraught, grieving, trusting parents the opportunity to even realize something may have been handled improperly. This is something that haunts my family and I and it is impossible to overcome.

Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

Not on here looking for work. I’m gonna start bringing awareness to mental health issues & bereavement. I was diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and persistent bereavement behavior after the death of my daughter.

What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

The setbacks in life are going to happen. Overcoming these setbacks is how you build a character and make you stronger for the next setback. The cycle repeats at every level you reach. Welcome them, it’s a sign of growth, use those instances to go to greater heights.

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

Success is reaching the outcome that you have worked to get to and being at peace with it.

What’s next for you?

Again building awareness around mental illness. It is an everlasting daily struggle that most people don’t believe it even exists.

Finally, how can people connect with you if they want to learn more?
