Veteran Leader Clemon Byrd Turns Service Into a Thriving Private Investigation Firm

Clemon E. Byrd doesn’t see service as something you retire from — for him, it’s a way of life. With a successful career in law enforcement, a deployment history in the Army National Guard, and a term on Auburn’s City Council, Byrd has built a reputation as a leader who shows up — in every sense of the word.

Now, as founder of Byrdeye Investigations, he’s channeling decades of tactical, civic, and strategic experience into a company that provides professional background checks to businesses, nonprofits, and faith-based organizations.

“I’ve always been about serving others,” says Byrd. “This business is just another way to protect the community I care about.”

A Career Built on Duty

Byrd’s résumé spans patrol cars, war zones, and council chambers. After more than 15 years on the Auburn Police Department, he took an active-duty military assignment. When that pivot didn’t pan out as expected, he joined AT&T — but didn’t stay away from public service for long. In 2014, he won a seat on the Auburn City Council.

During a deployment to Kuwait, Byrd reflected on how to apply his life experience in a way that could sustain him long-term — and serve others.

“I studied the private investigation field, took the state licensing exam, and Byrdeye Investigations was born,” he explains.

Leadership Tested and Redeemed

Leadership isn’t always glamorous. Byrd knows this firsthand. During his military service, he was relieved of duty as a company commander in Afghanistan — a difficult chapter that nearly derailed his confidence.

“I was angry. I blamed everyone else. But eventually, I realized — I had to own it,” Byrd shares.

Instead of quitting, he dug deep, sought mentorship, and committed to improving himself. The result? Two promotions and a rebirth of professional purpose.

Advice for Aspiring Leaders

Byrd is quick to remind others that failure doesn’t define you — but your response to it might.

“You’re going to get hit. But keep moving forward. Struggle is just proof you’re still in the fight,” he says.

He encourages aspiring entrepreneurs and leaders to stay the course, especially when it’s hard.

“Challenges don’t mean you’re off-track — they’re a part of it.”

Keeping Priorities Straight

Balancing family and work requires intentionality. While stationed in Texas, Byrd makes time to connect with loved ones and encourages other business leaders to do the same.

“As much as we love providing for our families, we need to be present for them too.”

What’s Next: Leading by Example

Clemon Byrd now has his eyes set on motivational speaking. His mission? To inspire others who feel discouraged, sidelined, or overwhelmed to keep fighting.

“Giving up is not an option. I want people to know there’s always hope.”
